The
dynamics of the Axial Age can be confusing until we sit down and examine the
periodization involved, especially in the case of Archaic/Classical Greece.
There we are fortunate because the Mycenaean world falls apart, leaving an
artificial discontinuity. We things pick up again we know that we are dealing
with an Axial phenomenon. Archaic
Greece
There has
been a tendency to consider the Axial period as connected with religion, but the
Greek case shows us that there is a continuum between all categories from
philosophy to science, and religion. Further, we can see that the idea of the
'secular' is born in Greece in parallel with the idea of the sacred, in history.
The question of democracy, with its intimations of abtract freedom is as much a
metaphysical/religious question as theism. The
