And The Eonic Effect

Civilization, Darwinism, and Theories of Evolution

The Book

An Eonic Model

World history shows us (as far as we can make it out)  something we couldn't have expected, though understandable once we see it, 'differential transformation regions'. The reason in retrospect is obvious, use the part to transform the whole. The effect is not unlike a 'strobe effect', on-off.  Note a dance-hall with this strobe effect. The 'free action' is, is not, the same in these conditions. Homogeneity can be assumed in the midst of a differentiating factor.

Thus, history is homogenous, all processes in eonic transitions can occur at all times, but these periods stand out, witness the Greek example, still unmatched for high speed intensity. What is the difference? We can only detect a contrast of creativity in clusters, 'self-consciousness' would be our generic description. Note  how this applies to the Old Testament account. History will prove homogeneous, as Biblical criticism is showing. Yet the 'differential period' stands out. Why? We can only infer this indirectly through macro-periodization. It is an eonic effect.

This suggests a frequency interpretation. We make that an hypothesis, and proceed to the interior analysis. This phasing generates the 't-stream effect ' and then sequential dependency', e.g. the medieval period, noone knew what hit them. We can do science, but we couldn't start the 'scientific revolution', or revive it when it faltered in antiquity. A discrete process intersects with a continuous one, and the t-stream crosses the boundary of phase, with the resulting eonic transition.
This 'eonic sequence' creates a field of distinct diffusion, a V-cone, e.g Christianity is inside the V-cone of 'ET5, Israel'.  The 'Axial Age' is an example of parallel interactive emergence, synchronous global evolution. We must distinguish this from technological and especially economic history.

Most important is the distinction of system action (eonic determination) and free action. We can only infer 'system action' in phase, but it is clear.  We are powerless to match these periods, witness the explosion of the early modern, and the Enlightenment.

Our study is empirical mapping, no predictive theory is possible, we are inside 'ET6'. We open 'three folders' to study our sequence, but our 'theory is a 'folder four', inherently ideological, a plan of realization. All  our theories are output.  To master the sequence we must master all ideologies, a supreme dialectic, to balance the part we select from the whole.

  Eonic Terminology

In order to use the term ‘evolution’ in our discussion, we must distinguish carefully between the empirical map of an evolutionary sequence, and the theory we invoke to explain it, between data, and a model. We will invoke a simple idea of ‘three folders’, opened for each of our turning points, the fourth being our interpretations. This distinction, and the failure to make it, between terrain, map, and issues of causes, is especially treacherous in the study of macrohistorical evolution since we can’t explain anything until we explain ‘everything’, which is impossible since we do not observe the process in its full sequence. Therefore a theory of evolution is probably always impossible. Furthermore, Folder 4 might be no theory, but a ‘free action script’ of downfield futurism, an enjoinder to action. This Folder 4 property clearly describes the Old Testament. The issue is similar to Popper’s notion of the Oedipus effect. Worse, we will resign ourselves to unique incidents of ‘local free action’. But these will sooner or later reckon with ‘historical forces’, without forewarning. This might be too pessimistic, but it is important to begin to see that a theory, philosophy, or religion, is an evolutionary product itself as free action almost always as eonic determination, and therefore not capable of ‘meta-observer’ objectivity. Two classic Folder 4 scripts would be the Declaration of Independence or the Communist Manifesto.

In any case, the dataset we have invoked is a large one indeed. And it must be clearly distinguished from perceptions of the so-called ‘economic interpretation of history’. On our way to this systematics of historical evolution, we must pause to recast our terms, invented for Crunch 1, to prepare an expedition as Crunch 2, and 3. Unfortunately, the pattern indicated is so vast, that the effort comes to a halt with a ‘crunch 3’ barely beyond what we have so far, and with an injunction to reach a large library as soon as possible. We can prepare a ‘search procedure’ rather than a narrative account. The attempt to describe this phenomenon is stymied by the inability of the non-specialist to give a better account of the rapidly rising complexity in each area than that of the specialists themselves. But then let these specialists speak for themselves.

It is interesting that Toynbee felt obligated to retell the history of each of his civilizations to ‘enforce his generalization’. We know that we are onto something more basic in the study of the eonic effect, because we are not required to enforce a generalization on the vastness of history, except at the interrupt periods. The rest is a matter of letting history speak for itself in the work of specialists in each area, indeed even in the interrupt areas. Further, narrative historians themselves suffer difficulty with just these interrupt periods. Is the interpretation of the Old Testament a black hole for scholars of all views? Now we know the reason. And finally, we will engage in very little effort to ‘enforce a generalization’ on anything, the vice of the macrohistorian, except that, in some wonder, we suspect that nature is itself involved in this business of ‘enforcing a pattern’. Confronted with the vastness and complexity of the perceived pattern of the eonic effect, it is necessary to attempt to construct a more precise descriptive language of the phenomenon in question in the gesture of Three Folders, and Folder Four (deliberations of historical structure).

Terminology of Eonic Model

A Frequency hypothesis
Fundamental Unit of Historical Analysis

Eonic transitions and divides
E-sequence, V-cone
Eonic determination, free action
Eonic sequence, temporal stream
Sequential dependency
Parallel interactive emergence
Eonic jump diffusion
Econosequence, technosequence

This terminology is less difficult than it seems, once one has a few examples. It will suddenly fall into place as a descriptive methodology. The frequency hypothesis remains just that, beware of it. We are dealing with a short and fragmentary sequence. We can fret our model in these terms and then zoom in for a closer analysis of the interior. Note the importance of diffusion, 'sequential dependency'.  We must know what diffuses from what, a severe requirement.

Like the Pyramids of Egypt, the data in our three folders stands independently of our theories. It is important to see that while any description will be a theory, most theories could be wrong, but the pattern of the eonic effect in some fashion remains. Our basic assumptions are multiply unstable and would become caught in the contradictions of ‘keel-haul divergence’. We will construct this three folders structure below in an abbreviated fashion, and proceed thence to a ‘folder four’ perspective, in reality implicit at each step: the existence of historical patterning is quite probably to be considered established by a preponderance of evidence, a strong conclusion, even taken in its weakest version, without what we will call the ‘frequency hypothesis’, that there is also a long-term waving in a frequency of 2400 hundred years, as evidenced by the similar extension of the pattern to ca. -8000. The basic idea is that of the eonic sequence, and its intersection with the forms of cultural emergence in its V-cone. We must be clear of the difference of the effect of historical action and the free action that expresses it. A quick summary of the terms used might be helpful in keeping one’s bearings in a longwinded discussion.

  • Civilization: the e-sequence of the eonic shard : The fragmentary visibility of the eonic effect as the discrete periodic emergence of general Civilization. We cannot quite include either the Neolithic or the New World data in our pattern, although, as guess work, we can strongly suspect they fall into one and the same pattern. The difficulty rises because we need to see the relative transformations, called eonic transitions, in a close packing of around three centuries, to include any period in our pattern. We can relist our terminology.

  • Eonic transitions and divides: the interrupts are ‘zone and period’ transitions in the eonic sequence, temporal and geographically conditioned. These seem to climax or terminate in a ‘divide’.

  • E-sequence, V-cone, and a frequency hypothesis: the sequence of interrupts and the creations of diffusion fields from particular sources, e.g. the Hellenistic field, and the Greek interrupt.

  • Eonic Determination and Free Action: an empirical breakdown of the ‘fast action’ period into an evaluation of such emergent entities as show the ‘flare activity’ effect. Often high level activity that wanes after the interrupt, e.g. the birth of philosophy, Greek tragedy, Hebraic prophecy

  • Econo-sequence, and techno-sequence: the historical determinations of economic and technological development are seen to be independent of the eonic sequence. This must be so if we distinguish eonic determination and free action. Economic activity must be open to the continuous free action of its exemplars, at any time, given the rising curve of economic development whose curve is different, may indeed swamp the eonic sequence in exponential cutoff. In general, one can look at many factors correlated in relation to eonic sequence. Invariably a dynamic connection is visible. E.g. the ‘religion’ sequence, the ‘war’ sequence, the fate of the idea of ‘property’, most of all, the emergentism of art. Art is crucial, for it shows that while ‘art’ shows high eonic determination, history is homogeneous as ‘free action’ and the injunction to replace ‘eonic determination’ with self-generated sources of creative endeavor remains to challenge not the mechanical determinism of the historical system, but its passivity.

  • Sequential Dependency and the Field of Diffusion: Our system shows clear evidence of leapfrog, of not ‘overdetermining’ intractable ‘full middles’, and resolves to phase and mideonic periods, the later echoing the former, but not in any deterministic relation.

  • Eonic jump diffusion: Each transition begins at the extended boundary of the previous transitional zone’s field of diffusion, the classic instances being the triangulation of Mesopotamia by Israel, Archaic Greece, and Persia. Development picks up at the frontier in each cycle.

  • Parallel Interactive Emergence: The areas of advance are independent and yet show frequent interactive effects. The Orientalizing period of Archaic Greece shows clear interaction with its neighbors, e.g. the Phoenicians, and yet shows itself to be the real eonic generator because it is outside the earlier zone.

  • Eonic sequence and temporal stream: We must distinguish the temporal stream of cultural ‘evolution’ or ongoingness with its sudden fast morphing as its ‘t-streams’, the Chou, the Vedics, the various Greeks, and Canaanites, pass into zone and period interruption. The whole and the part go into conjunction leaving the illusion of purely local cultural evolution.

Zoom Level Gateways

Armed new terminology, we can proceed to construct an abbreviated, ‘in principle’, three folders outline of the basic pattern, as bibliographical yeast and a zoom-level gateway, just enough data as place fillers for introductory discussion to anchor in different contradictory directions the basic e-sequence in the realm of historical facts, short of, if mixed with, statements or suggestions of eonic structure or causality. In fact, the basic objective is to visualize all at once the three shock waves and their spreading diffusion in one historically visualized image, in a fashion that does not succumb to teleological preconceptions.

Zoom Level Gateways

·   We need to organize data, and finally perception, both ‘globally and locally’ to move quickly through the flow sequence as a whole, in an attempt to visualize the period as of -3000 as a unity, with a concomitant need to zoom deeper at each point. We will construct an outline database, that can be extended or collapsed, accordion style. It is valid and essential to look at the whole, and it is certainly essential to proceed to a deeper level.

This structuring greatly simplifies the study of world history, if used with care, for it matches the natural contours of the ‘law of historical action’ itself. Inside the V-cone virtually the whole process of civilization falls into place. From there one proceeds to outline the periodized fields of study into generative eras, and their sequential dependencies, and the confusing study of diffusion.

We are inside evolution. That is, we are downfield in relation to an evolutionary episode, and we construct our future in relation to the processes of eonic emergence that seed new history. We can summon up a distinction of ‘data and model’, ‘three folders and folder 4’, to remember that our collection of evolutionary data is different from theory-formation, that ‘theories of evolution’ are themselves emergentist and are evolving in parallel with what they are trying to explain, not theories at all in the sense of the Newtonian granddaddy theory of ‘timeless laws’ of massive cosmological bodies, or of external privileged objective observers.

We have insufficient data for a complete statement of theory, but we do see civilizational evolution in relation to the eonic sequence we have indicated. Any historical statement as theory about ‘evolution’ will start to generate its own future. Explanation will demand a theory about the temporal evolution of these theories. We see that our theories of evolution are indirectly responsive to the French Revolution, in reverse images. In fact the history of science is directly imprinted by transition, and even shows strong structure near the divide period, as the world of models passes from Newtonian to ur-Quantum Mechanics in the great era of Lagrange and others. And yet the models of deterministic systems are barely getting underway toward a nineteenth century flourish. Our folder 4 is evolving along with our system, and is really a series of ‘free action inputs’ to the system itself. And your theories will be eonic emergents, no theories at all, since they all violate a mysterious level-hierarchy and will prove to be ‘free action scripts’ promoting or staying the process of transitional emergence. There is nothing necessarily wrong with this if it is honest, and does not claim the rubric of ‘science’ in a round of three card Monte proposed by Darwinism. The issue of science is that of sticking to facts. Darwinism wants to be a causal theory behind a statistical theory, that is a decision procedure about action and the ethics of action, and very dangerous action at that, survival of the fittest, an impostor in the realm of social change. It is the fallacy pointed to in the posing of theories, thought true at all times. Our approach answers to this. Instead of a complete theory of eonic evolution, we have ‘free action scripts’ containing the issues and emergents of the modern phase. There can be no generalization true at all times that we know of, and therefore the very basis of theory is set aside. We start, Looking Backward, with ‘Folder 4’, like a fourth turning point, free action, creating a new stream against the past set. This might be swamped by the sequence or be a theory of history, etc,…

Folder 4 We have made a clear distinction of ‘three folders’ study, as the creation of an empirical map of ‘eonic evolution’ (narrative world history), and the gesture of ‘opening Folder 4’, creating a theory of the evidence, a quite different activity, on the basis of unmistakable evidence of dynamical structure. A theory will start to change its own future. A map is a ‘zoom level’ device to guide action, based on assessments of detail and descriptive contour. With this map we start ‘downfield new-aging’, constructivist modernism, here claimed to be sequentially dependent to a high degree on the indicated phase period, etc,… That is all we can manage with the eonic effect, at first, for the clock starts ticking on theories of the pattern. The first mistake would be to make a theory of modernism apply to the whole, when the clear indication of the eonic sequence is the relative isolation of different worlds.

This peculiar distinction arises from our ‘reverse end run’, in the sense of the American game, around the two forms of ‘historicism’, or the general moving toward historical or evolutionary law, and the general defeated in theory by the move towards the concrete, and the unique. While our mood might tend toward the latter, long historical perspective reopens our perspective on the existence of a general historical ‘law’. But consideration shows that this ‘generalization’ reveals only an incomplete shard of frequency, and that this might in turn be only a unique evolutionary realization of civilization. We approach this new perspective until we reverse in the opposite direction toward the realization of our free action. We are left with a system of periodicity that transcends yet cradles the unique t-streams of living and vibrant culture and proceeds uphill toward a new direction, that we infer as integration, but whose endstate remains unclear, an ambiguous in relation to our own intermediate free action.

We see the difficulty of posing as meta-observers looking backward formulating theories of evolution. The sources are at a higher level of potential. Objectivity, in the formulation of theory, is a difficult requirement, for we cannot easily produce a theory explaining the modern transformation at a higher level than its highest manifestations. Nor can we find relief in the pose of value-neutrality, although this is a valid gesture. The problem of value-neutrality is that it must be value-free, a requirement the inventors of the notion failed completely to fulfill, although the root idea is of great importance. Most statements of social mechanics are derivative subsets of the rich, almost mysterious, seminal Enlightenment, itself a mere ‘patch’ in the greater field of the transition. This gave birth to positivism but is not the same thing. Indeed, most social thought as it emerges in the nineteenth century after the period of the Enlightenment is hard-pressed to not be swept up in the tide of dialectical proliferation that so obviously accelerates in the generation of the divide.

It is useful to be brief, for the utility of this approach is that it chauffeurs one back to the activities of specialized investigation as soon as possible. Our ‘zoom level gateway’ structure can expand at any point, and yet our eonic pattern will remain invariant. We can collect eonic data on demand and add evidence until the printer protests. The point is to grasp the relations of phase and diffusion or sequential dependency. We are sequentially dependent on the ‘industrial revolution’, more or less obviously. The same is true of Shakespearean or Racinian tragedy, a fact evident from our inability to define the term ‘tragedy’, let alone write one. These relations are empirically rigorous, granting that the ‘fundamental unit of analysis’ hovers between a photograph of the problem and a full explanation. Note however that we can always, in principle, transcend this sequentiality. In practice, it is not so simple. As any modernization theorist would confess, the ‘fast sequence’ of eonic generation is hard to duplicate downfield as a repeatable sequence. But we should aspire to liberating the rising tide of free action surpassing TPX immersion.

Civilizations are only passing clouds, free action, the solidity of dynamical motion is the sequence of phase. We could never hope to stabilize a description, nor feel satisfied with the particular decisions about subtheories, whose alternation would not essentially change the basic pattern. The method is extremely powerful and could, at will, given time and occasion, lead to twelve Toynbean volumes plus twenty four more, and better done, because the method contains its own correctives, imposes no pattern of its own, and ‘hugs the facts’. The data in evidence for the overall pattern is almost an embarrassment of riches, and the sudden addition of new data from more and more and quite difficult specialties turns us into an evidentiary Midas, or the Man with the Million Pound Note: we often ‘understand’ without being able to explain anything, and get a loan against a future theory of ‘eonic causality’ from the clear systematic structure of the eonic effect in the widest range of culture. We can start, and move through the e-sequence, by looking backwards. Note the resemblance, unintentional and after-the-fact, to the Hegelian ‘looking backward’ and the relation to Kant’s challenge.
