The study of the eonic effect greatly illuminates the question of the 'evolution
of religion'. The questions of secularism, modernity, and the postmodern
reaction are also highlighted by the periodization of the eonic model, which
suggests a way to look at the issue of 'new ages' in terms of the 'eonic
sequence' of evolutionary transitions. The modern New Age movements deserve a
careful commentary in this regard, and this series will examine some of the
issues. This commentary will be updated and extended in future versions, but the
current selections examine the New Age effect of the Axial Age, along with the
question of the 'eonic evolution of religion'. In the process it is relevant to
encounter the complex spiritual tradition of India, in light of the eonic
effect, in the process examining the tradition of Samkhya which shows how
a material version of the evolutionary psychologies of India allow us to sort
out Cartesian confusions.
